Recently, I spoke to a Spokane Youth Symphony supporter who began giving quite generously to SYS in the last year or so. When I asked her why she decided to donate to our organization, she shared with me about her music background and love of learning, and she felt like SYS aligned well with her values and the conviction that children and young musicians need opportunities to learn and grow in the way our organization provides. What she seemed to be saying to me was that young music students experience the “SYS opportunity” when they can play in one of our orchestras and increase their ability to learn by a very effective means.
This supporter asserted that (and I agree with her!) the new understanding gained by each of our students under the instruction of outstanding conductors and professional instrumental coaches, and the teamwork they experience in the orchestra, will lead to excellence in many other areas of their lives.
My conversation with this SYS contributor reminded me of a few important ways that studying music helps young people:
· Learning to read music, which includes applying various rhythmic patterns, and performing at different dynamic levels results in improved concentration, memory, and analytical thinking.
· Working with other musicians to create beautiful music builds communication, empathy, and cooperation.
· Maintaining a practice schedule and working for accuracy develops self-discipline and commitment.
· Performing in front of an appreciative audience can boost self-esteem and provide a sense of accomplishment.
Our organization offers a wonderful way to positively impact the lives of many young people in the Inland Northwest!
