On Sunday, January 19th, 22 members of the Spokane Youth Symphony Orchestra (SYSO) performed concerto solos before a panel of judges and an audience of SYS students and family members, competing for the opportunity to perform as a soloist at the March 16th "Hidden Gems" concert at The Fox Theater.
This year's judges were former SYS Artistic Director, Verne Windham, and Spokane cellist, Cheryl Carney. Each student participant performed a concerto movement from the standard repertoire with a piano accompanist. The student participants included 11 violins, one viola, three cellos, three flutes, an English horn, an oboe, a clarinet, a French horn, and a tuba. The winners of the competition were Amiah Van Hill - violin, Dane Hendrickson - cello, and Dylan Aagaard - tuba. Congratulations to all!
